aware — the poignant awareness of impermanence

Born and raised in Nikkō, I grew up naturally close to its seasonal rites and ceremonies. Yet what strikes me on visiting Kyoto is an artistry and care that reach into its every corner — of an altogether different order from Nikkō's. The layered depth of a city that has woven Japanese culture itself since the age of the Man'yō. When I think of the building techniques and customs handed to Nikkō only because Kyoto was their source, each visit reminds me that the essence of Japan's shrine and temple culture returns, after all, to Kyoto. The arrangement and color of trees, calculated down to the very angle of the seasonal light — passed from past to present, guarding the city, entrusted to the next hands so that 1,200 years from now it may keep the same bearing.

Kyoto: the city that forms the bedrock of Japan. How, then, are we to protect that yugurebearing?

日光に生まれ育ち、折々の行事や神事には自然と親しんできた。だが、京都を訪れて感じるのは、その隅々にまで行き渡った意匠と心配りであり、日光のそれとは次元を異にしている。万葉の昔から日本文化そのものを編み上げてきた、この街の重層。京都という源があったからこそ日光へ伝えられた建築技法や作法を思うとき、日本の寺社仏閣文化の精髄はやはり京都に帰するのだと訪れるたびに思い知らされる。季節ごとの光の入射角までも見据えた木々の配置と色彩。過去より現代へと受け継がれ、街を護り、さらに1200年の先にも同じ佇まいであれと、次代の手へ託されてゆく。

日本の基層をなす街、京都。その佇まいを、私たちはどう護りうるのだろうか。
